Recognising the need for quality educational facilities in the
Northern Territory, and in line with recent building
developments and expansion at the Park, WMI has designed this
education program specifically for schools to meet outcomes
contained in the Northern Territory Curriculum Framework. To
date, our education and training has ranged from local work
experience students to more formal courses on crocodile
conservation, management and husbandry for overseas students.
Staff have collaborated with researchers at Charles Darwin
University, and the University's business practice firm
("Crocodylus World") is modelled on Crocodylus Park. The latter
gives students a unique opportunity to experience what is
involved in running a commercial business operation. Through our
new schools program we aim is to provide students with
experiences that promote the conservation and value of wildlife
and wild places.
Many of the formal learning experiences included in the program
centre on crocodilians, however, the Park's animal collection
also includes freshwater and marine turtles, primates, birds (eg
cassowaries, emus, ostriches), and big cats (lions, tigers,
leopards, ocelots), however, if required, lessons can be
tailored to take account of specific needs.
Crocodylus Park's collection is unique in the Northern Territory
and represents a living resource that can be used by teachers to
complement units of work being undertaken within their
classrooms. We hope that you will find something of interest
that can be used to support classroom units of work and look
forward to welcoming you to Crocodylus Park over the coming
school year. |
